Little nervous. Last year did not go great partly due to marathon training and no speedwork. On the other hand, I have been running in Alley Pond doing long and slow hills every sunday so who knows. Still, I am changing age groups this year and I just know it will be tough so I REALLY wanted to make a showing.
Saturday was beautiful but sunday a little colder. Started with the kids run. Both kids wanted to do the kids run though we were not sure about the distance. No one knows if its 1/2 mile or a full mile. Still, the kids go off. Eventually I see Jeremy huffing and puffing. Yo, they gave out trohphies this time for the kids. Usually they give medals or ribbons. Anyway, they start to close down the kids finish line and meanwhile Jessie and Lee still have not come in...I go ask them and they are sure that all the kids came in. I'm like, "guys...Where is my daughter???". Vince gave me his bike and I went out to look for them figuring Jess will yell at me for no helmet...Found them. Jessie fell and Lee had to band-aid it. Meanwhile, at the finish line, they asked Jeremy what is Jessie's name so when she was almost at the end, they were screaming her name. She was surprised and estatic. Trophy helped too.
Adult race starts and I went out too hard. Still it was fun to run that course fast as opposed to slow and steady and knowing that I still have to run it a few more times. Music (battery) died at mile 3 - bummer. I was at mile 4 (of 5) when I hear the feet joining me. I decide to pace off him for a little bit. I trailed him for a little and let him lead by 10 feet. At mile 4.5, I decided it was now or never. I caught him and passed him. Going down the last hill, I pushed hard. I really wanted to break 40 minutes. First year at this race, I came in 2nd for age with a little over 40 minutes. Last year was garbage at 42. I'm big time going anaerobic and sprinting. I see Len and yelled him to join me. He already finished. I was using him to as a pacer. Seemed like he had trouble keeping up with helped too. Did it at 39.20+. Came in 2nd for age and happy. No injury and good psychological victory.
