Greetings runners!
We're still a long way from the Steamtown cannon blast (85 days, 12 hours, 25 minutes) but I thought I'd take a moment to answer a few of the questions we are getting from curious Steamtowners.
Q: Are you banning backpacks, duffel bags, draw string bags, etc.., again this year?
A: Yes. Like most major road races, for safety and security reasons, we no longer allow runners to carry non-transparent bags onto the race buses or bring them to the start or finish in any manner. We will supply each of you with a clear bag when you pick up your race number. Please use that clear bag or something comparable on race day.
We very much appreciate all of the cooperation we received from our runners regarding this new policy last year - although the three runners who showed up at the buses in the nude took things a little too far.
Q: I have been training in the nude wearing a camel. Can I wear it in your race?
A. Well, why anyone would want to wear a dromedary and run 26.2 miles is beyond me - a puppy or ferret maybe - but we will allow you to wear Camelbak or other hydration products at Steamtown. Please be advised however, that such products will be subject to inspection by law enforcement and race and zoo officials.
Q: I was on a training run and I was startled by a nude runner wearing a camel. I tripped and hurt my back and now I need to withdraw. Can I get a refund?
A: As detailed on our entry form and in the confirmation e-mail you received when you registered, if, by September 1, you send us an e-mail stating that you are officially withdrawing, we will ask Active.com to issue you a partial refund - $25 - which will be applied to the credit card that was used to register you.
Q: My friend, who I trust completely, has run Steamtown seven times. He told me the course is completely flat. Is that true?
A: Click the below link, scroll to the bottom of the page, read the section called "The Hills" and then feed your friend to the camels.
http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/4.1.html
That will do it for now. We'll be sending you regular updates as race day draws closer.
Thanks for picking Steamtown and good luck with your training.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings Runners!
Well, with Steamtown just eight weeks away, it's time for us to start sending you our goofy pre-race updates. Our goal is to give you the kernels of info you need to have a positive experience at Steamtown. However, if you hate bad writing and even worse humor, you may want to shield your eyes.
Here is this week's update:
Aid Stations - We will have 13 aid stations along the course. All will have water. And, thanks to the generosity of long time sponsor Canada Dry/Royal Crown of Olyphant, PA, we will once again have Gatorade at all stations.
The Gatorade flavor will be lemon lime. Upon hearing the news, a crestfallen orange Gatorade said, "I am orange with envy."
We will not have GU or gels along the course so please bring your own. Sometimes, some of the volunteers working the aid stations put out snacks such as cookies, Gummi Bears, fruit, pretzels, Filet Mignon, etc... However, assume that the stations will have just water and Gatorade and consider any snacks to be a bonus.
The locations along the course currently slated for aid stations can be found by clicking this link: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/4.html
Runner Shirts - Once again, by a very narrow margin, (15 to 14) our race committee chose opaque vs. transparent for your long sleeve tech shirt. This year's shirt color is purple (regular purple not Barney purple). The shirt was unveiled at our last committee meeting to many ooohs and ahhhs. Most felt it looked great.
We realize from doing this for 19 years that it is impossible to select a color that everyone likes. We know many of you are purple haters. Perhaps you were attacked by the Fruit of the Loom grape guy or had a bad experience with purple cabbage. We feel for you and hope that we will select a color you like for a future Steamtown.
Speaking of Purple - Your finisher medals have arrived and look great (at least to us). The medal itself is antique nickel but the ribbon is purple with white lettering. A photo of the medal was posted to Steamtown's Facebook page and the reviews by your fellow runners were fantastic! For example, here is a real review from an actual runner:
Love this race... Hate the medal. The exact medal for the third straight year. Not positive either, but it looks like the leftover 2012 medals were also refurbished and branded with "2013" the next year as well. With the race director commenting on the dropout rate before in his cool emails, it makes me more suspicious that these medals were used again to cut costs. This was the only downer about this AMAZING race!
Ah, the joys of being a race volunteer.
Purple Elephants
Runner 1: How do you shoot a purple elephant?
Runner 2: I give up.
Runner 1: With a purple elephant gun.
Runner 1: How do you shoot a green elephant?
Runner 2: With a green elephant gun!
Runner 1: Nope. You strangle him until he turns purple and then you shoot him with a purple elephant gun.
Dropping Out and Transfers - As noted on your entry form, if you send us an e-mail by September 7 indicating that you are dropping out, we will ask Active.com to apply a partial refund - $25 - to the credit card that was used for your registration.
Some of you have transferred your bib to other runners through Active.com's transfer process. Please be advised that all such transfers must be completed by September 15. No transfers will be allowed after that date.
If you wish to do a transfer, please e-mail us the name and e-mail of the other runner and we will e-mail both of you the transfer instructions.
That will do it for this update. Remember, if you need to reach us, please send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com. Do not reply to this e-mail because for some reason we do not completely understand, your e-mail will not make it to us. I am thinking e-sabotage by purple haters may be the cause.
Sincerely,
Jim "Great, now the elephant people will be coming after me" Cummings

Greetings Runners!
Here is this week's pre-race update:
Chip Timing - As you probably know, we will use magical computer chips to time your journey from Forest City to Downtown Scranton. You will be given your chip when you pick up your race packet. Use your shoelace to fasten it to your shoe. Terrified first time marathoners are advised to fasten the chip to their shoe before they go to bed on race eve, curl up in a fetal position, rock back and forth, and weep.
We will have a magical timing mat at the start,at one point along the course, and at the finish. If your chip does not beep when you cross a timing mat, do not worry. A confused but helpful teenager will run to you holding a pad and pencil and using something called "math" will eventually figure out what you cost (after they call their manager).
Boston Marathon Qualifying - Boston uses chip times as official qualifying times. We send a complete list of our results to Boston officials a few weeks after our race. A qualifying time at Steamtown 14' means you can register for Boston 16'. More info: http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/participant-information/qualifying/qualifying-standards.aspx
Age Group Awards - We use actual place of finish, not chip times, to determine age group awards and prize money. More info: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/3.2.html
Post Race Showers - Few if any area hotels provide late check outs to our runners (thank you for your support community minded hoteliers!). To avoid supportive post race comments from friends and family such as, "If you think I'm riding all the way back to Baltimore with you stinking like that, you are crazy!", we are making arrangements to have free, post-race showers available. Odds are very good that Lackawanna College (5 blocks from finish) and The Greater Scranton YMCA (10 minute ride from finish) will again make showers available. As soon as we button this up, we will let you know.
September Half Marathons in Northeastern PA - There are two highly regarded half marathons scheduled for September here in our area. Here are links:
D&H Rail-Trail Distance Run - http://www.nepa-rail-trails.org/index.php?pro_mode=marathon
Pocono Lake Region 13.1 Half Marathon - http://www.lakeregioncc.com/pocono-lake-region-13-1-half-marathon/
Important Dates:
Dropping Out - If you plan to withdraw and seek the $25 partial refund, you must send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com by September 7.
Transfers - All bib transfers must be completed by September 15. If you plan to transfer your bib, please send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com and include the name and e-mail of the other runner. We will then send both of you the transfer instructions.
I think that is it for now. Remember, please do not reply to this e-mail if you need info. Rather, send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com.
I may not be able to respond to your e-mail right away as we are loading up the family van to take my freshman son to college tomorrow. I am sure that will go smoothly - unless a teenager with a pad and pencil greets us upon our arrival.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Hidey ho and happy Labor Day weekend runners! Here's hoping you don't have to Dry-Lock a basement or carry a piano upstairs this weekend.
Here is this week's update:
Condition of Trail - We have received a handful of e-mails from concerned runners saying they heard parts of the trail on our course were strewn with rocks last year. I am here to dispel that nasty rumor. They were not rocks, they were runner bones.
For the first time, we did receive a few complaints from runners after last year's race about the trail, specifically that there were some annoying pebbles and rocks that impacted their foot falls. We have spoken to the trails' owner, the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority (an OUTSTANDING marathon supporter by the way) and they have assured us that they will give the entire trail a very good going over and will sweep away all rocks, pebbles, and runner bones so you have an enjoyable trail experience on race day.
Bonking on Race Day - If you experience medical problems on our course, or feel like all of a sudden you are carrying a piano and just don't feel like running anymore, there will be support available to help you.
First, the course will be patrolled on bicycles once again by the dedicated volunteers from the Elk Mountain Ski Patrol. If you run into difficulty and see a bike rider, flag him or her down and they will call for assistance.
Second, we will have five "sag wagons" on the course. These shuttles are owned by another great marathon supporter, Lackawanna County. If you need to stop running, just hop on board and the sag wagon driver will give you a ride to the finish (after he massages your feet and says, "there, there" everything will be okay.").
Third, we will have our medical command center at the finish line. The command center and numerous ambulance companies stationed at points along the course will all have radios and will be tied into the 911 system. If you see a runner in distress, flag down a bike rider, tell an aid station volunteer, etc.. and ask them to call 911. An ambulance will be dispatched as quickly as possible.
Housekeeping - Remember, to withdraw and receive the $25 refund, you must send us an e-mail by September 7. All bib transfers must be completed by September 15 (send us the name and e-mail of the other runner and we will send both of you the transfer instructions).
Oh, and a note on transfers, they must be processed on Active.com. You can't cut a deal with someone on Craig's List or E-Bay. If a guy with a bushy beard and lots of hair on his arms and legs comes to packet pick up and tells us his name is Muffy, we will not give him a bib.
In future e-mails we will give you details about the Expo/Packet Pick Up, race day parking and transportation, etc... so please be patient. We are fine tuning a few details right now.
Send all questions and comments to racecommittee@hotmail.com.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings Steamtowners!
I hope you are enjoying a relaxing Labor Day with family and friends.
Just wanted to send you an e-mail to answer two questions we have been receiving from concerned and/or naive runners.
Concerned Runner: I am in a panic! I cannot attend your race expo because ("My sister is getting married that day." or "My daughter is in a soccer tournament that day." or "I have to spay or neuter my pet that day."). How will I get my packet? Can you mail it to me? Oh, woe is me, woe is me.
Calm Race Official: Worry not concerned runner! We are ready for over-scheduled runners like you. We do not mail race packets (bib, timing chip, shirt). However, we will have a packet pick up table inside Forest City High School at the starting line on race morning. Please attend the expo if you can. We will send you details about all of the good things the Expo has to offer in a future e-mail. But if you can't make it, please don't drive 120 MPH from Baltimore trying to get here on time. Your packet will be waiting for you at the start on race morning.
We will allow a friend or family member to pick up your packet. However, we will require them to show their ID and sign for your packet.
Here is a link to some info about the Expo: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/3.3.html
You will see reference to us requiring clear bags and you showing your ID. We will address our security procedures in detail in an upcoming e-mail so I ask for your patience at this time. Be advised though that we WILL allow Camels and other similar fluid transportation devices.
Naive Runner - I have been looking at your elevation chart and wow, there sure seems to be lots of downhill during the first 8 miles. It will be like running through a cool rain forest without a tie on! So here's my plan, I will run extra fast on the early downhills and bank some time. That way, I can take it easy during the second half of the course and still meet my goal time. Pretty brilliant, eh?
Concerned Race Official - Heck no! That kind of tomfoolery will leave you curled up in a ball at mile 23 with biting pain in your quad muscles. A dog might even be licking the salt off of your face. Every race expert we have consulted has told us it is critical that you try to run an even pace at Steamtown. DO NOT GO OUT TOO FAST during the early miles! You'll be sorry.
Don't believe me? Then attend the panel discussion at 2 p.m. at the Expo. Our race Director Bill King and world-class distance runner and coach Jon Sinclair will be there to discuss the right and wrong ways to run our course.
Well, that will do it. Best of luck with your training.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings from balmy Scranton!
Here is this week's update:
Withdraw Deadline - If you wish to withdraw and request the $25 partial refund, you must send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com by midnight this Sunday (September 7). No refunds will be issued after that date.
Fear of Getting Lost - We have been receiving e-mails from runners concerned that they may get lost during our race.
Concerned Runner: "Please help me! I had a terrible nightmare last night. I dreamt I was running Steamtown and then, suddenly, I was all alone. It was dark and I was in my underwear. My Garmin said I had run 50 miles. The next thing you know I was in Canada and Justin Bieber was trying to run me over with his ATV. Please tell me this won't happen on race day!"
Us: "You are a very interesting person. But odds are you will not get lost. This is because we will have 2,000 volunteers on the course guiding your way. Plus, the course will be marked and we will have large signs on the road to indicate each mile. And don't forget that we will have volunteers on bikes looking for runners in distress. Plus, Justin will be on his ATV.
Aid Station Beverages - You already know that each of our 13 aid stations will have lemon lime Gatorade and water, but did you know that Gatorade will be on the first set of tables and water on the second? This is for two reasons: 1) So you know the order and 2) So in case you slobber Gatorade all over yourself you can wash off with water.
Please be warned however, that high school kids from area cross country teams will be working most of the aid stations. They might be busy texting when they are given the above instructions so don't be shocked if the order is wrong once or twice.
Local History - Once again, the Steamtown National Historic Site ( http://www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm ) and the Electric City Trolley Museum ( http://www.ectma.org/ ) are both offering one free museum entry to any runner who shows their bib upon entering. If you are a fan of American history, you will like these museums. They are located in Downtown Scranton, behind the Mall at Steamtown (No, everything in Scranton is not named Steamtown. Geesh!)
OK, that's it for tonight. Future e-mails will cover a variety of topics including clocks on the course, bus transportation, security, the Expo, the pasta and post race party, baggage an much, much more.
Have to run now. My dog Steamtown us barking and needs to go outside.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Runners,
This e-mail is directed only to runners who have made reservations at the Best Western Plus Hotel on Tigue Street in Dunmore. If you are not staying at this hotel, there is nothing here for you to see. Retreat to the safety of your homes people.
We are writing to advise you that there was information on our local news about the Best Western Plus Hotel recently.
You can learn more at the following links:
http://thetimes-tribune.com/news/dunmore-hotel-hopes-to-reopen-soon-1.1742834
http://wnep.com/2014/08/26/more-problems-for-dunmore-best-western-plus/
As of two days ago, the hotel was still closed. It has been reported to us that a note on the door said "re-opening soon." It has also been reported to us that when you call the hotel, no one answers and there is no message.
We are not advising you what to do regarding this matter. We are simply making you aware of the situation.
I can tell you that the local Visitors Bureau called area hotels to see which ones still have availability. Fortunately, there are quite a few, including several on Montage Mountain. Montage is about a 10 minute ride from the finish line. This year's Pasta Party and Post Race Party are on Montage Mountain.
Some of the hotels on Montage Mountain with availabilities include the Comfort Suites, the Spring Hill Suites, the TownPlace Suites, and the Hampton Inn. Contact information for these and other hotels can be found here: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/1.4.html
Contact information for the local Visitors Bureau can be found here: http://www.visitnepa.org/.
The staff of the Bureau are more up to date on this situation than we are. Please contact them during normal working hours M thru F for advice.
I hope you find this information to be helpful to you.

Greetings Runners!
We're just a month away. Hope your training is going well. Here is a Friday evening update from chilly Scranton, PA.
Confirmation Packets - We plan to send to our printer on Monday the Confirmation Packets that we will be mailing to you in a few weeks. The packets will contain information about our race, maps, directions, family viewpoints, etc... Please read it with great scrutiny. We will post a pdf of the packet on www.steamtownmarathon.com in a few days.
If you have moved since you registered, please e-mail us your new address ASAP.
Drop Outs - A hearty thank you to the eleventy million of you who sent us e-mails between 11:45 p.m. and midnight on September 7 letting us know you are not coming to Steamtown. Active.com is in the process of applying a $25 partial refund to the credit cards of those of you who contacted us prior to the deadline. Even though we are no longer providing any refunds, PLEASE send us a courtesy e-mail if, going forward, you decide not to attend our race and pick up your race packet.
Transfers - Our transfer deadline ends on Monday night September 15 (midnight). If you are planning to transfer your bib, the entire transfer must be completed by the deadline. No transfers will be processed after that time. If you find a taker for your bib, please e-mail racecommittee@hotmail.com immediately and we will send you the transfer instructions. All transfers must be completed through the Active.com system - no exceptions.
E-Mails from First-Timers - We have been receiving e-mails from first-time marathoners who appear to be a bit stressed at the thought of running 26.2 miles. They are asking some odd questions.
Stressed First Time Marathoner - Greetings race officials. I am worried I may experience some discomfort during your race so I am planning to have my cousin Gordon ride alongside of me on his bike the whole way (to mist me and sing me show tunes). That will be okay, right?
Us: Heck no, that's not okay! Under no circumstances should you ask anyone who has not registered for the marathon to enter the race course at anytime. No one is allowed to run, bike, skateboard, roller blade, unicycle, etc.. alongside of you. Anyone who disobeys this rule risks being disqualified by race officials. This rule is in place to help ensure the safety of our competitors. Do not break it.
Pasta Party - this year's Pasta Party will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the newly remodeled ski lodge at the Montage Mountain Ski Resort, 1000 Montage Mountain Road, Moosic, PA. Montage is an approximately 15 minute ride from the finish line and is easy to get to via I-81. You will be receiving a map and directions in the Confirmation Packets we will be mailing you in a few weeks.
Cost is $12 per guest age 10 and older and $8 per kid between the ages of 3 and 10. Children under 3 eat for free, will stare at strangers, and will run around the ski lodge with pasta stuck up their noses yelling, "I'm a bug!" Jim Cullen, the "Marathon Minstrel" will again be on hand to provide live musical entertainment. He may even sing a few show tunes, but he will not be misting anyone.
Some of the menu items include penne with vodka sauce, baked ziti, bowties with marinara sauce, chicken with pesto cream, roasted vegetables, salads and fruits, cookies, and something called "cous cous." I don't know what cous cous is but I am sure it is being served to show you how suave and debonair we are here in Scranton (please don't e-mail me to tell me what cous cous is).
Reservations are not necessary. Just show up with your friends and family. There will be lots of seating.
This update has now reached the point of being too long. I will try to send another update on Sunday. Good luck on your 20 miler this weekend!
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director, Steamtown Marathon
P.S. Remember, all e-mails should be sent to racecommittee@hotmail.com.

Greetings sore-legged runners! Hope you had a great long run this weekend. The taper is coming soon!
Here is an update from a sunny Scranton, PA:
Stay the Course - The course for this year's marathon will be exactly the same as last year's.
We had tried very hard to include a beautiful new section of Rails to Trails, which begins around mile 12. We even measured and marked a new course. However, by adding the new section of trails, we needed to change the course elsewhere to keep it at exactly 26.2 miles. We were unable to secure approval for this new course from all of the necessary local officials so we have no choice but to "stay the course."
Maybe next year, our 20th.
Post Race Party - this year's Post Race Party will be held at the Montage Mountain Ski Lodge (yes, same place as the Pasta Party) from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Free admission. All runners, their families, and our great volunteers are welcome. Food will include penne, porketta, roasted chicken, roasted carrots, ratatouli (boyfriend of cous cous), etc... All food and soda are FREE. Each adult (21+) will get two FREE drink tickets (beer and wine). After that, you have to pay. This is to discourage adults from drinking too much and running around the lodge with pasta stuck up their noses yelling, "I'm a bug!"
Live music will be provided by Take 3, the official rock band of the Steamtown Marathon.
Bus Transportation to the Start - a future e-mail will be devoted to race day parking and bus transportation but I did want to answer one question that is often asked by our runners, especially concerned first-time marathoners.
Concerned First Timer - I am a bit worried that I will be somewhat nervous riding to the starting line so I am going to have my cousin Gordon ride the bus with me to massage my feet and sing me show tunes. What time will you be giving him a ride back to the finish line?
Us: Half past never. The buses are strictly for runners. DO NOT ask friends or families to ride to the start with you. We will not be giving them a ride back.
Volunteers - If you know someone interested in volunteering for our race, either at the expo on Saturday or during the race itself, please have them send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com and we will find a spot for them. They'll even get a spiffy free t-shirt.
That'll do it. The transfer period ends on Monday the 15th and we'll be assigning bib numbers and setting the field right after that.
Sincerely, Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings from Scranton on a crisp, dry evening.
Tonight's update covers what awaits you at the finish line.
1) Thunderous applause and cheering will cascade off of Scranton's skyscrapers as you near the finish. You will feel like a rock star (or extremely popular accountant).
2) When you reach the finish, smile big because we'll be taking your photo. You can review your pics on or about Wednesday after the race at www.runphotos.com.
3) We'll wrap you in a "mylar" blanket to keep you warm. Don't know what mylar is? Just Google "Balloon Boy Hoax Fort Collins, Colorado."
4) We'll then hang the 2014 medal around your neck. As you know, a runner reported on Facebook that our medal is made out of melted down old medals. However, he forgot to mention that we mix in some aluminum foil and Silly Putty too.
5) Should you need help after crossing the finish, our volunteers will bring you inside the adjacent Federal Courthouse where medical personnel will take great care of you (and you will get to testify about that tax scandal you recently found yourself in).
6) After testifying, you can stop by our massage area inside the Courthouse. Our massage volunteers will rub you the right way - for free.
7) You can keep your timing chip as a souvenir (and hang it in a teeny, weeny frame).
8) Che' Steamtown, our acclaimed food tent will once again be open 50 yards past the finish line. Reservations are not necessary. Eat and drink whatever you want. It's all free.
9) You can claim your baggage in the finish area too - but we'll explain how that works in a future e-mail.
10) And finally, if you stink, you can take a shower in Lackawanna College's sports annex (5 block walk away) or the Greater Scranton YMCA (10 minute ride away). Directions can be found in the Confirmation Packet. Okay, that's' enough for now. Remember, you can read the Confirmation Packet at www.steamtownmarathon.com and we'll be mailing you a hard copy at the end of next week.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Salutations Steamtowners!
Our last e-mail briefed you about the finish. For this one, we go to the starting line at Forest City High School. Some highlights:
When you arrive at the school, you will be greeted by cheering cheerleaders and lots of volunteers including many semi-awake yet giddy high schoolers.
You will be handed a small memento that you will treasure always. I can tell you it will be purple but it will not be a grape.
You will be offered a bottle of water and escorted inside the school. Yes, no standing in wet grass underneath a cold tent at Steamtown! We are a ritzy marathon.
Unofficial Pace Groups - We do not have official pace groups at Steamtown BUT by using high tech devices called "signs taped to the walls" we make it possible for you to form unofficial pace groups with your fellow runners.
Inside one of the largest rooms in the school - probably the cafeteria - we will tape dozens of finish times on the walls (i.e. 3:00, 3:10, 3:20, etc...). Simply ask a volunteer to direct you to the room and then find "your sign" and introduce yourself to the others standing there. It will be up to you to strike up a conversation and develop a plan to run together in hopes of achieving your goal.
Sample Conversation:
"Greetings fellow runner. I'm Bob and this is Carol, Ted, and Alice. We are hoping to run a 3:55 today and are wondering if you'd care to form an unofficial pace group with us so we can work together to try to reach that goal."
"Uh, yeah. I'm like Gore-Donn. I think my cousin will want to do that but she's doing her nails right now. Can you give me a ride to the finish?"
Peeing - Regular runners at Steamtown have probably grown tired of our dire pee warnings but because we always have first-timers, we have no choice but to brief you about this very delicate subject. First, we will have about 90 port-a-lavs outside of the school - in the front and out back. You are strongly encouraged to use the port-a-lavs. Now, you might be thinking, "Well, where else am I going to go? Do you expect me to pee outside on the walls of the school or something?"
Alas, therein lies the rub. We have indeed had runners pee ON Forest City High School, which caused several impressionable students to go instantly blind. This is probably because the offenders were women runners. I am not making this up. Those women were quite talented. Please do not, under any circumstances, pee on Forest City High School.
Also, a few miles into the race you will see a small lumber yard on your right. Do not pee on the wood piles. Yes, runners do this too. It's as if they are saying to themselves, "Great, some lumber. I can finally pee!" Don't do that. The owner gets really mad. Please wait for a port-a-lav. We will station them along the course.
Lining Up at the Finish Line - When you move outside to the starting line, you will see several alert teenagers scattered along the sidelines holding signs that say, 6, 7, 8, 9, etc... These numbers indicate the pace you hope to run (minutes per mile). To avoid unnecessary trampling of slow runners who foolishly line up near the front of the pack, please line up roughly near the sign indicating what you think your pace will be. Be advised though, that all prize money and age group awards are determined by your actual place of finish, not your chip time.
Starting Gun - The race will start with a VERY LOUD cannon blast. Consider covering your ears. One year, the concussion from the blast was so strong, it knocked over one of our volunteers who was sitting on a bike about 100 feet in front of the pack. He had to scramble to the sidelines to avoid being trampled. By the way, he was dressed from head to toe as a clown.
That's it for today. We will discuss, transportation, baggage, parking etc.. in separate e-mails so please be patient.
Taper, taper, taper.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director, Steamtown Marathon

I know this is out of order but this is the order that they sent the email... I believe it's a typo and should have said September 26...
Greetings Nervous Runners!
Subject: Race day parking and transportation.
Buses to Starting Line You will be transported via school buses. They will be yellowish orange. The buses will arrive in Downtown Scranton at the intersection of Wyoming Ave. and Spruce Street, one block from the finish line, at 5:30 a.m. A map of Downtown Scranton will be included in the Confirmation Packet you will receive in the mail. The same map can be found in the Confirmation Packet on www.steamtownmarathon.com. We fill the buses and we send them. Fill and send. Fill and send. The last bus leaves for the starting line at 6:45 a.m. You snooze, you lose. The trip takes about 45 minutes. Only registered runners can board. No family, friends, or cousins named Gore-Donn allowed. The buses will not give anyone a ride back to Downtown Scranton. You do not need to show a bib number to board. If you did not indicate on your entry form that you planned to take a bus, do not worry. Just hop on board. Buses and fuses don't rhyme - strange.
Downtown Scranton Parking There is ample parking downtown at meters and in garages. This is because only marathoners and race officials are crazy enough to be in Downtown Scranton at 5:30 a.m. on a Sunday. Metered spaces are free. Just don't park in a fire lane, tow away zone, on the Courthouse lawn, etc... Garages are not free. They are "pay to park." Plus, they are fancy garages that are not staffed by human beings. To get your car back, you have to pay with cash or a credit card at pay stations on the main floor. See Downtown map for locations of meters and garages in close proximity to the finish line. REMEMBER WHERE YOU PARK! It will probably be dark when you arrive in Downtown Scranton. Remember the names of streets and cross streets. Take note of landmarks. Don't be like this poor runner:
Runner - "Hi race official. I can't find my car. Can you help me?" Race official - "Sure, what street did you park on?" Runner - "Um, I don't remember. My cousin Gore-Donn drove. He was supposed to remember." Race official - "Well, where is Gore-Donn now?" Runner - "I don't know. He rode the bus with me to Forest City and now I can't find him!"
Getting Dropped Off at the Start (Forest City High School) by Family/Friends You do not have to take a bus to the starting line. Someone can drop you off. Once they drop you off, they can leave right away using the same roads they used to get to the start. They can stay to watch the start but we discourage this. This is because several of the roads they will take to get to Forest City will close a few minutes before the race starts. If they stay, they will need to use a somewhat complicated escape route to leave Forest City. If they usually get lost driving to the grocery store, the escape route is probably not for them. Directions to Forest City H.S. and the Escape Route can be found in the Confirmation Packet. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, DRIVE YOURSELF TO THE START AND LEAVE YOUR CAR THERE!!! We DO NOT provide return transportation to the start. Are you listening Gore-Donn?
This link should (might) take you to the Confirmation Packet: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/steamtownmarathon/UserFiles/File/2014-steamtown-confirmation-packet.pdf.
The packets are at our mailing vendor now. We are a bit behind but they should be mailed by the middle of next week.
Next e-mail will focus on race day baggage.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director, Steamtown Marathon

Greetings Taperers,
This is the e-mail we hate to send. In fact, I have a splitting headache because of it.
This concerns your race day baggage.
Unfortunately, with the explosions at the 2013 Boston Marathon still fresh in our minds, and with the world news getting worse every day, we are again banning runner knapsacks, gym bags, duffle bags, drawstring bags, and similar non-transparent bags on our buses, at the start, and at the finish.
The ban does not apply to hydration packs, "Camels", hydration vests, hydration belts, and fanny packs. However, such devices will be subject to inspection by law enforcement and marathon officials.
If you are interested in having your belongings transported from the start to the finish, you can obtain a clear plastic bag at the packet pick up tables at the expo or the starting line. We will have clear bags available at the buses as well. The swag bag you will receive when you pick up your bib, chip, race shirt, etc... will also be clear.
While I cannot tell you about our entire race day security plan, I can tell you that we will have bomb sniffing dogs, a visible uniformed police presence, and undercover officers.
Last year, we had 100% compliance with our clear bag rule, which we greatly appreciated. We are hoping the same will be true this year.
If family and friends bring non-clear bags to the start, course, or finish, they will be subject to inspection too.
For more information about the bag policy, please read the Confirmation Packet: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/steamtownmarathon/UserFiles/File/2014-steamtown-confirmation-packet.pdf
When you are ready to check your clear bag at the starting line, you will find several baggage tables inside and outside the high school staffed by the "Real Housewives of Forest City." They will write your bib number on your bag. Burly UPS drivers will transport all bags to the finish line. Their trucks will not be brown. They will be clear.
When you leave the finish area, turn left to get to the baggage tent. Point to your bib number and say, "Ugh" and an alert teenager will retrieve your bag.
Thank you very, very much for your cooperation in this matter.
Future e-mails will address race expo activities, family viewpoints, and race weekend weather.
They will also be less serious.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings Runners!
Here is a not too serious update for a Monday afternoon:
Race Certificate - Did you know that you can print your own finisher's certificate from our website? It's true! Using the magic of something called "technology" we have created an interactive certificate that you can fill out all by yourself.
Here is a link: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/steamtownmarathon/UserFiles/File/Annual_FinishersCertificate_Form.pdf
Just remember, you are on your honor. You have to look at yourself in the mirror after you fill it out and hang it in your den.
Friend: Hey, I see you ran the Steamtown Marathon in beautiful Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Finisher: Yes I did and you are right, Scranton is beautiful.
Friend: Wait, it says you ran a 2:07! What???
Finisher: Yeah, I know. I had to run into a burning building to save a puppy. Slowed me down big time.
But what about Yoga? - You may have often wondered aloud, "Why don't marathons offer yoga at their expos?" We'll, wonder no more! When the Expo opens at 11:00 AM at Scranton High School, Hilary Steinberg, owner of Jaya Yoga, will lead interested runners in a series of gentle poses and stretches to help ease their bodies and minds before the big day. This practice will be designed with the runner in mind, and will focus on loosening his/her typically tight hips, legs, and back. The practice will close with a directed meditation intended to help the athlete calm his/her thoughts and focus on his/her race. Interested runners are encouraged to bring their own mats.
Note: the mats do not have to be clear!
If I tried to do yoga, they would have to take me to the ER. If you are interested, just show up at the Expo at 11:00 A.M.
More info: http://www.jayayogastudio.com/Jaya_Yoga_Studio/Welcome.html Field is Set - We continue to receive e-mails from runners trying to transfer their bibs and some from runners who still want to register. We will respond to those e-mails individually but unfortunately, we are not going to be able to accommodate those requests. Bibs have been assigned and the field is now official.
Dropping Out - We always hate to get e-mails from runners letting us know they are dropping out but we do appreciate them. It lets us know that we do not have to prepare a packet for them and take it to the start if they don't show up at the Expo. If you have determined that you cannot run but have yet to notify us, PLEASE do so.
All for now.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director, Steamtown Marathon

Greetings from Scranton, PA where the fall foliage is about one week from reaching its peak and forecasters have said cooler weather is in the offing.
Here is a quick update for a Thursday afternoon:
A Watched Mailbox Never Boils - I can tell by the e-mails you have been sending to racecommittee@hotmail.com that our tardiness in mailing out the Confirmation Packets is making you boiling mad. Mercifully, they were mailed via first class yesterday. There were a few last minute changes that we had to make. We apologize for stressing you out.
Please keep in mind though, that the Confirmation Packet, in all its informational might, can be read in its entirety by visiting our home page at www.steamtownmarathon.com. What you will see when you open the pdf file on our home page, is exactly what you will be receiving in the mail. We aren't sending you chocolates. What you'll see is what you'll get.
Race Morning Food & Beverages - For the second year in a row, Subway is our largest corporate sponsor. In addition to helping to fund the marathon, Subway is also going to open its store located immediately adjacent to the finish line at 5:30 a.m. on race day. The store is located on N. Washington Avenue near the intersection with Spruce Street and is just one block from the bus pick up at Spruce St. and Wyoming Ave. I know some of you will want to grab a cup of coffee, bagel and/or ham and cheese grinder before you get on the bus. Please consider patronizing this very generous sponsor.
Steamtown Merchandise - Once again, Steamtown Marathon apparel (shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets, etc...) will be available for sale at the Race Expo. Here is a typical conversation overheard at the Expo every year:
Spouse - Hey look, cool clothes with Steamtown's logo. Do you want to buy something?
Runner - Nah, I have a feeling this marathon is going to be lame-o. I don't want to waste the money.
Here is a typical e-mail we receive a few days after the race:
Runner - PLEASE tell me you have Steamtown apparel left. I forgot to buy some when I was at the Expo. Who can I call? What should I do??? Help!
Good news. In addition to selling Steamtown apparel at the Expo this year, National Running Center will also be selling it at the finish line, just in case our race doesn't stink as much as you thought it would. However, the apparel sells out quickly every year so trying to get some after you go home may be a bit of a challenge.
Dropping Out - Many thanks to those of you who sent courtesy e-mails to racecommittee@hotmail.com this week letting us know you are dropping out. We were sorry to hear the news but appreciate the heads up.
Okay. That'll do it. Next e-mail will be all about the Race Expo and packet pick up. Yoga anyone?
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director, Steamtown Marathon

The Race Expo will be held at Scranton High School next Saturday. The Expo officially opens at 11:00 a.m. and closes promptly at 5:30 p.m. Please make every effort to pick up your packet (bib, chip, shirt) at the Expo. However, if you absolutely cannot attend the Expo, you will be able to pick up your packet on race morning inside the main door of Forest City High School beginning at 6:30 a.m. Our registrars will be there.
We understand that there may be a wedding, kids' soccer tournament, parole hearing, etc... that you have to attend on Saturday. We get it. But if you have nothing major scheduled, please make a good effort to get to the Expo.
However, don't drive 110 MPH through a construction zone to try to get here at 5:29 p.m. Relax. Your packet will be waiting for you at the starting line.
Wherever you pick up your packet, you MUST show your I.D. If someone else is picking up your packet, they must show their I.D.
Here are a few things of note on the schedule
10:00 a.m. - Our fearless Race Director Bill King and legendary distance runner and Steamtown technical consultant Jon Sinclair ( http://www.anaerobic.net/jon ) will lead a 3 mile jog from the main entrance to Scranton High (expo) through Downtown Scranton and past the finish line. I've told them not to go too fast. Jon won't. Bill can't. Meet at the school entrance at 9:55 a.m. sharp.
11:00 a.m. - There will be a Yoga session at the Expo. I do not know how long a typical Yoga session lasts. However, once its done, its done. It's not a day long thing. Please bring your own mat.
Food will be available at the Expo. Not a Ruths Chris kind of deal. Just some locals with soup, subs, etc...
Race Print - We will be making available free, 2014 Steamtown Marathon prints (12" x 18") at the Expo to all runners. Came out very nice. Unfortunately, we will not be mailing them after the race.
Weight Class - The Steamtown National Historic Site will again be sponsoring our friendly weight class competition for guys and gals. In order to participate, you need to get weighed on the official marathon scale at the Steamtown National Historic Site booth, which will be staffed by fellow marathon committee member Pat McKnight. He'll be the guy in the park ranger uniform yelling, "Choo, Choo!" Weight classes can be found in the Confirmation Packet. If you do not attend the Expo, you cannot participate in the weight class competition. Questions? E-mail Pat at pat_mcknight@nps.gov.
Kids Race - At the very same Steamtown National Historic Site booth, Ranger Pat will also be signing up kids from ages 5 to 11 for our annual Kids Race, which will be held at 9:00 a.m. sharp at the finish line on race day. Each kid gets a shirt. Cost is $8. Distances vary by age group from one block to about 1/4 mile. Questions? E-mail Pat at pat_mcknight@nps.gov.
Apparel - there will be three vendors at the Expo selling running apparel.
Course Map - There will be a gigunda course map on display. The map will include an elevation chart. You will look at it and gasp (or faint).
Course Presentation - at 2 p.m. in the school auditorium, Bill King, Jon Sinclair, and past Steamtown champion and Runners World staffer Kathleen Jobes, will make a presentation about Steamtown's course and offer tips for running marathons that have lots of downhill. Bring your Steamtown print and they will be glad to autograph it for you. We highly recommend this presentation to first time Steamtowners.
Info Table - Come to our information table if you have any questions or are freaking out and need a hug.
Done. More e-mails containing various odds and ends are coming your way soon.
Take care.

Holy cold Batman! Frost on the car windows this morning. Hoping for a day like this next weekend.
Current forecast for next Sunday shows temps ranging from the upper 40's to the low 60's with a chance for showers. Too early to put much stock in that forecast but you may want to consider throwing an extra pair of sweat socks in your bag - you can wear them over your hands if the temperature nosedives - or, entertain your fellow runners by making puppets.
"Hi, I'm Steamy the sock puppet. I will run alongside of you for the next four hours!"
The main purpose of this e-mail is to touch on race viewpoints for family and friends.
Unfortunately, Steamtown is a tough marathon for spectators. We have selected two spots on the course we feel spectators can access without getting lost and without crossing the path of the runners. Directions to the Viewpoints were included in your Confirmation Packets and can also be found here:
http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/2.2.html
Now, we understand your spectators will be filled with great wonder and glee in anticipation of seeing you whiz by them on the course. However, please tell them not to let that wonder and glee turn into road rage if they hit some traffic on the way to the Viewpoints.
Accessing and parking at Viewpoint #1 is fairly easy. Most spectators park a few blocks from the course in shopping center lots and walk the few blocks to Main Avenue in Carbondale.
Accessing and parking at Viewpoint #2 will be more stressful. They will definitely hit traffic as they get close to Viewpoint #2. However, provided they leave as soon as you pass them at Viewpoint #1, and, unless you have mastered the art of teleportation, they will arrive at Viewpoint #2 long before you do.
However, parking near Viewpoint #2 is primarily in residential areas. PLEASE ask your spectators to be respectful of those neighborhoods and please ask them not to park across someone's driveway. Many senior citizens live near Viewpoint #2. They will turn into vicious Ninja warriors if your spectators prevent them from getting out to get their paper and doughnuts on race day. We'd rather avoid such bloodshed if at all possible.
I have to go now. My son is doing a school report and he has to interview me about the meaning of happiness. I'm thinking it has a lot to do with sock puppets and doughnuts.
We'll send you a few more e-mails during the week and then it's on to Forest City. Try not to step on a fork between now and next Sunday.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings Runners!
Here are some odds and ends - OK, mostly odds.
In no particular order, here are links to some websites that may come in handy for you:
Lackawanna County Convention & Visitors Bureau - the number one site in our area to search for things to do on race weekend - http://www.visitnepa.org/#
Coupons - The Visitors Bureau contacted its members and asked them to consider some special deals for our runners. Click link to see what they came up with - http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/steamtownmarathon/UserFiles/File/2014_weekend_packet_steamtown_marathon.pdf. Note: you have to show your bib number or Confirmation Packet whenever you use any of the coupons.
Boing! - Here is something that might be fun. You get your kids really sugared up and then you let them bounce on trampolines for an hour! It's possible, just 10 miles south of our finish line at Sky Zone Scranton. I have been inside this place. Very cool. You need to schedule your jump time in advance - http://www.skyzone.com/scranton
Hit Me! - As if running a marathon wasn't enough of a gamble, you can gamble for real at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, a 15 minute ride from the finish. Several very nice restaurants are located here too - http://mohegansunpocono.com/
I Don't Need No Stinkin' Pasta Party! - Some of you may want to try some local Italian cuisine while you are in town. If so, you may want to take a trip to Old Forge, about a 20 minute ride from the finish line. Here is a link to some reviews: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g53376-Old_Forge_Pennsylvania.html. Make reservations and remember to ask if they take credit cards when you call.
Alfredo's - If you'd prefer to stay within a five minute ride from the finish, try Alfredo's. Nice portions at affordable prices -http://www.alfredoscafe.com.php5-1.dfw1-1.websitetestlink.com/
Ugh, I Hate this Hill, but I Love Lobster! - When you are climbing that last gruesome hill approaching mile 26, look to your right. That lighthouse and giant octopus are not hallucinations. They are part of Cooper's Restaurant, which has a very cool interior decor and great seafood - http://www.coopers-seafood.com/Scranton/index.php
Sloppy Grub - Every year at the Expo info table, we are asked if there is someplace nearby where, "We can get some good, sloppy food quick and cheap." There is. It's called the Glider Diner and it is within walking distance from the Expo - http://www.gliderdiner.com/
There Ain't No Party Like a Scranton Party - On Sunday evening, after the marathon, there will be a multi-pub music festival in Downtown Scranton. If you feel the urge to keep on rockin' after our post race party, consider making a trek back to the Electric City - http://www.electriccitymusicconference.com/
Let's Catch a Flick - There are several movie theaters in the immediate Scranton area. The movies have sound and everything! 1) http://www.cinemark.com/theatre-detail.aspx?node_id=1560 2) http://www.regmovies.com/Theatres/Theatre-Folder/Regal-Dickson-City-Stadium-14-IMAX-9316 3) http://www.fandango.com/marqueecinemassteamtown8_aabtd/theaterpage
OK, just a few more e-mails to go and then it will be race weekend. Think positive thoughts.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings

Runners!
More odds and ends....
Race Results - Mark Courtney and Runner's High will again be timing and scoring our race. Unfortunately, we do not have live runner tracking at Steamtown. The race results will be posted when Mark uploads them to his website - probably by Sunday night. Results will be posted here: http://www.runhigh.com/2014RESULTS/-%20RH14Results.html
Typical e-mail we receive after the race every year:
Runner - "Yeah, I am standing in your crummy food tent at your crummy finish line. I finished FIVE MINUTES ago and I just checked and the results are NOT UP YET!!! You guys are pathetic."
Yes, we are pathetic but that's because we are a bunch of tired volunteers in tired bodies with broken dreams. We beg for your patience.
Here is another typical post race e-mail:
"PLEASE HELP!!! I ran your so-called race and I just checked the results and I am not listed!!! Now people don't believe that I ran a marathon. Why did you do this to me??? Don't you know how hard I trained for this? You people are terrible."
Unfortunately, every year, the main timing mat misses a few chips. Sometimes, a 22 year old woman from Miami shows up in the results as a 57 year old man from the Bronx. There will be some mistakes. Please try not to panic over this. We will fix all errors. The back up mats will help us get things in order.
If your results are missing or incorrect, please, stay calm, and send a non-hostile e-mail to Mark at smc@runhigh.com and cc: us at racecommittee@hotmail.com. Please explain the problem, estimate your finish time, and tell us your bib number. That will help us make things right.
Third Time's a Charm - Click link to watch a video hosted by three-time Steamtown champ Matt Byrne as he takes you from the early part of our course all the way to the finish line - http://www.viddler.com/v/747e0c8b
And Another Point of View - neat video of our course taken by hand cycle athlete and multi-time Steamtown Champ Rob Leiser - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7VVADYmA-M
By the way, the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority has done a great job over the past week getting the Rails to Trails in shape.
Finally, I know I am about to jinx us but latest forecast for Sunday is sunny, with temps at the start in the low 40's and temps around noon at the finish in the upper 50's to near 60.
That's it for tonight.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings

Greetings Marathoners!
I am starting to get that special warm tingle. That can mean only one thing. The Steamtown Marathon is just four days away!
Or, maybe it's my lunch.
Today's Update:
Speed Bumps Kill - OK, put your remember cap on for this one. There is a speed bump at Forest City High School just a few feet before the starting line. You will run over this speed bump. It will be on the ground. Look for it. If you don't, you might trip over it and disaster will ensue.
Now, you might be thinking, "Why does this fool think I am incapable of stepping over a speed bump?" This is why. I have been at the starting line for 18 Steamtown Marathons. When the cannon goes off, you all start laughing and yelling and running like Kindergarten kids chasing butterflies.
Don't believe me? Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZPjnRjEhV4
Please focus on your footfalls, not the butterflies.
Reflectors Kill Too - Several miles into the race, when you are running down Route 171 and admiring the brilliant fall foliage, you will begin to notice little reflectors in the center of the road. These are not your normal reflectors. No. They are the ankle biting kind that rise vertically from the pavement and will reach out and knock you over if you are not careful. They are all wearing little black jackets with silver chains. Please stay to the right of the center line and orange cones that mark the course until this horrible danger passes.
Highway Construction - there are several points where you will hit construction along Interstate 81 in the Greater Scranton area. The worst stretch may be if you are driving on I-81 South towards Scranton from Upstate New York. When you get to about mile marker 194 (Clarks Summit Exit) traffic tends to back up quite a bit (not sure how it will be on the weekend though). You may want to factor some delays into your travel plans and leave a little earlier to reduce your stress level.
Getting to the Finish Line - Click link to watch video of hand cycle athlete Rob Leiser taking you through the final miles of the course all the way to the finish line - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTuE4kgHBJw
Bib Shenanigans - We are hearing rumors that some of you have been conducting nefarious tomfoolery with your bibs such as selling them on E-Bay for example. Bad runners. Very bad.
Any bib transfer that has occurred that was not processed through the Active.com system will not be honored at packet pick up. If we find out that a runner purchased a bib in a back alley or at a flea market, we will NOT give them their bib and timing chip at packet pick up. Further, if we discover the identities of any runners who have sold their bibs in this fashion, they will be banned from running future Steamtown Marathons. Remember, it is never too late to do the right thing.
Closed Hotel - In a previous e-mail, we forwarded to you a link to a news clipping about some woes that the Best Western Dunmore (200 Tigue Street, Dunmore) was having. We just heard today that the hotel has not re-opened. If you still have reservations at this hotel, I recommend you call the Lackawanna County Convention & Visitors Bureau tomorrow (Friday) during normal working hours (say 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST). The Bureau has a list of hotels with rooms available. They will also be at the Expo on Saturday. Contact info: http://www.visitnepa.org/
Will try to send one final e-mail tomorrow. Stay well and stop chasing butterflies.
Sincerely.
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director, Steamtown Marathon

Greetings Jumbled Balls of Nerves!
I'm edgy and I'm not even running. Just keep taking deep, relaxing breaths. You'll be fine. Or you'll hyperventilate.
Unless something bizarre happens, this will be the last pre-race e-mail.
Forecast - First, latest weather forecast calls for temps at the start in the low 40's and temps at the finish around noon approaching 60. Partly sunny. Light winds.
Keep them in your Thoughts - You may be following the news regarding the tragic shooting of two Pennsylvania State Troopers in Blooming Grove, PA - about an hour's drive from Scranton. Corporal Bryon Dixon's life was taken and Trooper Alex Douglass was critically wounded.
Alex was registered to run Steamtown.
We'll be offering a special prayer for the troopers at the starting line this year. Please keep these gentlemen and their families in your thoughts. Hopefully, Alex will be at the starting line next year.St. Joe's Kids - Just past the 24 mile mark you will see what keeps our volunteers going when we have down days - the wonderful children and staff from St. Joseph's Center, in Scranton. Since we started the marathon in 1996, we have donated close to $1.2 million to Saint Joseph's with a good chunk of that amount coming via runner donations. We thank all of you who donated this year. Please give the kids a wave when you run by. Learn more: https://www.stjosephscenter.org/
Thank a Volunteer - We are a 100% volunteer army with 3,000 volunteers helping out on race weekend. Please consider thanking a volunteer for all that they do to help you have a positive experience at our race.
Social Media - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/steamtown26 Friend us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/steamtown.marathon?fref=ts Say nice things about us at parties.
Inspirational Video - We know some of you have doubts about your ability to finish. Some of you may even be scared out of your mind. Last year we sent out the following video link and we received a nice response. Give it a gander if you are having self doubt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sUKoKQlEC4
Final Thoughts - On behalf of the entire Steamtown Marathon Race Committee, I thank you for choosing our race. We know there are dozens of excellent fall marathons and we are honored that you have chosen Steamtown. We hope you enjoy our race. Safe travels.
If you have any questions when you get to get to the race expo, stop by and see us at the Information table. I'll be the unimpressive one.

Greetings runners!
It'a been a long day and I am very tired so I apologize for whirring my slurds.
In many respects, today was a normal Steamtown. Runners parked at Forest City High and asked us at the finish when they could catch the shuttle back to the start. Others forgot where they parked at the finish. We had claims of runner kidnappings, shirt violence, and residents demanding to be reimbursed for the gas money spent idling while waiting for you to pass by. You know, the normal stuff.
However, in many respects, today was quite special too. The weather was perfect, Jen Rock set a new course record, we had five wheelchair athletes, and hey, you buggers can run! The median finish time was 4:02:11, which is outstanding for a marathon.
We have been flooded with e-mails. Most positive, some irate, others which have scared me to my core.
We will get back to you individually as soon as we can but it may take a while. Tomorrow, we have to clean up the Rails to Trails, which right now look like the aftermath of a Rolling Stones concert. If you sent us an e-mail, please be patient. We wil get back to you.
A few things:
Results are up. Links:

You can create a finisher's certificate for yourself: http://www.steamtownmarathon.com/steamtownmarathon/UserFiles/File/Annual_FinishersCertificate_Form.pdf
Your race photos will be up by Wednesday at www.runphotos.com.
If you are missing from the race results or if your name or age is wrong, etc, don't panic! Please send an e-mail to Mark Courtney at smc@runhigh.com and cc: me at race committee@hotmail.com. We will make sure you get listed in the official results.
As for today, we know the food tent line was way to long and we know some of the shirt sizes ran small. We apologize and promise to do better.
All for now. Will send you a final wrap up email soon. Thanks very much for choosing Steamtown. Good luck walking down stairs tomorrow.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director

Greetings Runners!
Pay no attention to that brutal quad pain behind the curtain. You'll be back to normal in just a few short weeks.
A few more thoughts for you:
Age Group Awards - We are receiving e-mails like this today: "Hey, I checked the results and found out that I finished 3rd in my age group. I guess the awards ceremony must have happened when I was standing in your stupid food line in the blazing sun for two hours. Will you be sending it to me?"
Yes. All unclaimed age group awards will be mailed in the not too distant future.
Trail Clean Up - I have often said that being the Assistant Race Director is like being the Race Director - without the glitter. That thought crossed my mind again today when fellow committee members Bob and Kelli Drazba and I, wearing surgical gloves (and haz mat suits), were picking up 10,000 gel packs, socks, water bottles, oranges, medicated wipes, diapers, sandwiches, Gore-Donn, and a variety of unidentifiable items from the trails.
I believe I will now call the Rails to Trails the Centers for Disease Control Trails. Next year, we will put trash receptacles at the mile markers in hopes that you will kindly use them.
No-Shows - We had approximately 450 registered runners simply not show up at the starting line. We purchased 12 buses that were not used. That means less money for Saint Joseph's Center. I don't understand. I just don't understand.
Rate our Race - Please consider posting your comments about our race - good, bad, or life-threatening on marathonguide.com: http://www.marathonguide.com/races/racedetails.cfm?MIDD=540141012
Final E-Mail - We'll probably send you one final e-mail in about a week because I am still waiting for the other running shoe to drop. Usually, a few days after the race - when thinking everything went off without a hitch - I hear comments like, "Hey, you heard about that runner getting attacked by the clown, right?" or "Did you decide to arrest the old lady with the garden hose or were you content with your volunteer beating her up?"
Think I am kidding? Here is part of a real e-mail I received just today from alert marathoner Russ C. who ran our race:
I do have one minor quibble that I'd like to pass along. I got to the busses at about 6:30 and we headed up to Forest City right away. When we got to Carbondale our driver stopped at MacDonalds and took 7 minutes getting a coffee. There were a bunch of very anxious, very confused runners hoping to get to Forest City waiting around for what felt like a long time. Can you either provide your drivers coffee or if you already do so, let them know it's available?
This is of course stunning, unbelievable, and very disappointing. The driver was in McDonalds for 7 minutes and the runners didn't hijack the bus? What kind of marathoners are they?
Thanks again for running our race (unless you were one of the 450 no-shows). Get some rest. You earned it.
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Infectious Control Director

Greetings.
We want to make Steamtown better. You can help.
Yes, you!
Will you please do us the favor of answering a one question survey?
Please keep your answer to 5 sentences or less.
Serious answers only please.
We very much appreciate all of the very complimentary e-mails we have received over the past two days. They are giving us a warm and fuzzy feeling. But we are now looking for your suggestions for improving our race.
Just click on the below link to answer the question.
Good thing you don't have to type with your quads, eh?

Probably one more wrap up e-mail coming your way soon.

Greetings Runners!
Just one final e-mail to close out our 19th annual Steamtown Marathon.
Survey - First, many thanks to the more than 500 of you who have so far answered our one question survey about making Steamtown better. We clearly have some work to do. I will prepare a summary report and present it to our race committee at our wrap up meeting in November.
Marathonguide.com - Thank you also to those of you who posted comments to www.marathonguide.com. We very much want runners to make an informed decision about whether to run Steamtown. Your comments will be very helpful in that regard.

Results - We will soon (a few weeks from now) be sending the race results to our contacts at the Boston Marathon. They are like a dog on a bone when it comes to getting results from marathons. We want to make sure the results are correct so we will appreciate you checking your individual results and, if there is a problem, sending our timing and scoring vendor Mark Courtney an e-mail at smc@runhigh.com. Please cc: us at racecommittee@hotmail.com. Describe the problem, give your name and bib number and approximate finish time and Mark will do his best to get things fixed.

Boston - Remember, Boston uses chip times for qualifying and if you posted a qualifying time at Steamtown this year, you can register for Boston in 2016. Note: Boston continues to change its qualifying standards so please check http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/participant-information/qualifying/qualifying-standards.aspx to make sure you are still eligible to register.
Photos - Your official race photos are up at: http://www.racephotonetwork.com/QPPlus/SearchBibNumber.aspx?EventID=1575903&_AccountNumber=2963
You all look swell (or maybe swelled).
Video - thought you'd like to see this video that a helpful citizen posted to You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYeGWoTVKR8
Lost and Found - A few of you did not claim your baggage after the race. Park Ranger Pat McKnight has it. if you need to get it back, please ASAP send an e-mail to racecommittee@hotmail.com and Pat will contact you.
Also, if you lost some newly purchased Steamtown apparel while at the expo, send us an e-mail and describe what you lost. We may be able to help you.
That'll do it. Registration opens next year on April 1 at www.steamtownmarathon.com. We'll probably sell out fairly quickly as it will be our 20th anniversary.
By the way, I am sorry this e-mail was so serious but I am writing it on my lunch break at my real job and I am wearing a tie. I believe it is illegal to write funny e-mails when you are wearing a tie.
Hope to see you next year (even you Gore-Donn).
Sincerely,
Jim Cummings, Asst. Race Director
